Figuring out how fit you are...

This morning I read this article about can you be fit and fat at the same time.

http://shine.yahoo.com/channel/health/can-you-be-fat-and-fit-2338049/

Basically it says that the traditional BMI test may not be accurate to determine if you are healthy or not.

You can calculate your BMI here: http://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/

BMI is determined by your height and current weight. For my height and weight I'm considered overweight at 26.6 (Overweight is 25-29.9). The big flaw with this particular method is that it does not take into consideration that muscle weighs more than fat.

With the Hip to ratio test that is suggested in the article I'm an apple shape:

Results:You have a waist to hip ratio of 0.86. The information you entered: Sex = Female, waist = 32 inches and hip = 37 inches.

Your shape puts you at increased risk of coronary heart disease, diabetes and stroke. Frequently referred to as apple shape, you tend to keep fat at your midsection and less on your hips. Your body converts this upper body fat to energy whenever your body runs short. This raises cholesterol and blood pressure.

You can figure out your Hip to waist ratio here: http://www.healthstatus.com/calculate/whr

So what the heck does all this mean? Well based on both of these calculations I still have some work to do to get into better shape.

I do wonder though what role genetics play in this. I mean I can continue to work on what I eat and how I workout but I can not control my overal body frame and it's size. I think that there has to be an easier way to figure out if I'm fit or fat and that there is more to this equation than just a few simple measurements.

In the mean time while I figure this out and continue to work on my overall healthy lifestyle I found this article about dressing for my apple size to be interesting and will just try to focus on ways to emphasize my shape at this stage in my life.

What do you think? Can you be fit and fat? What methods do you use to determine if you are fit/fat/healthy etc? Do you think it's possible for your body shape to change if weight is lost or gained or do you think you will always be a certain shape because of your genetics? I'm curious to hear what others think and if you have any articles that have helped you at all.
